Market capitalization is a valuation estimate: token price multiplied by the relevant token supply. It is not the amount of cash stored in the project.
Simple formula
If a token price is $0.00001 and the supply used for the calculation is one billion tokens, the implied market cap is $10,000.
Supply choice matters
Sites may use total, circulating or fully diluted supply. For a fixed-supply meme coin, the distinction can be small; for locked, burned or vesting supply it can be substantial.
Price source matters
The price may come from the latest trade, pool reserves or an indexer. Thin liquidity can cause a small trade to move the implied market cap significantly.
Use market cap with liquidity
Market cap describes implied valuation while liquidity describes available trading depth. Read both before making conclusions.
A repeatable research workflow
Begin with identity: chain, contract address and the official source that published it. Then inspect the deployment and earliest transfers. Classify known system addresses such as pools, lockers, burn addresses and protocol contracts before calculating concentration. After that, review the largest remaining wallets and trace how they were funded or received tokens.
Market data should be cross-checked with the pool. A displayed market cap is an implied valuation, not a bank balance. Compare it with active liquidity and the size of recent trades. If a small swap can move price dramatically, the headline valuation may be fragile. Volume is also turnover; the same capital can trade repeatedly, so volume alone does not prove broad demand.
