Bonding curves and liquidity pools are both automated markets, but they establish price and liquidity in different ways.
Bonding curve
A curve prices trades against a programmed reserve relationship. It can provide a predictable launch path and a visible graduation target.
Liquidity pool
A DEX pool holds two assets and prices swaps from pool state. In V3-style pools, liquidity can be concentrated in selected price ranges.
The transition
Some launchpads begin with a curve and graduate to a pool. Direct-launch systems skip the curve and create DEX liquidity immediately.
Which is better
Neither model is universally superior. The right model depends on how the community wants price discovery, liquidity custody and graduation to work.
How to verify the mechanism in practice
Start from the token contract and follow the launch transaction rather than relying on a dashboard label. The transaction logs usually reveal the contracts that received assets, the pool that was initialized and the transfers that created the market. For concentrated-liquidity pools, also inspect the position manager and position owner. For bonding launches, inspect the curve contract and the state or event that defines graduation.
When a wallet predicts a revert, do not treat the warning as cosmetic. Gas estimation and simulation can expose a wrong router ABI, invalid tick, insufficient allowance, expired deadline, impossible minimum output or another contract-level condition. Cancel the transaction, reproduce it with the same calldata using an RPC simulation, and decode the revert before trying again.
Mechanism checklist
- Confirm the exact chain and contract addresses.
- Separate token valuation from real pool liquidity.
- Identify who owns or locks the LP asset.
- Check the fee tier and fee recipients.
- Inspect minimum-output or deadline protections where relevant.
- Use explorer events to confirm that the interface matches onchain state.
